The Secret Garden is a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, serialized in The American Magazine from 1910 to 1911 and published as a book in 1911. Mary Lennox is a sickly, spoiled ten-year-old born in British India. When a cholera epidemic kills her parents, she is sent to live with her uncle, Archibald Craven, at Misselthwaite Manor on the Yorkshire moors. There she hears of a walled garden that her uncle locked, burying the key, after his wife's death, and a robin helps her find it. With Martha, the maid, her brother Dickon, who knows the ways of the moors, and the mysterious Colin, Mary discovers that the garden can come back to life. Renewal and healing are its great themes. A bestseller in its day, it is now part of the canon of children's literature.
