Mist (Niebla) is a novel by Miguel de Unamuno, written in 1907 and published in 1914 by Editorial Renacimiento. Unamuno refused to call it a novel and named it a “nivola” instead, to mark its freedom from the rules of the genre. Augusto Pérez is a wealthy young law graduate, the only son of a widowed mother, who leads a quiet, routine life without great concerns. Everything changes when he falls in love with Eugenia, while Rosario, the girl who irons his clothes, stirs other feelings in him. Between love and long conversations with his friend Víctor Goti, Augusto begins to ask himself what it means to love, what it means to live and what meaning his own existence has. With humour, irony and philosophical depth, Mist turns a tale of love into a reflection on identity and freedom.
