Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott, was published in two volumes, in 1868 and 1869; in the United Kingdom the second part was issued separately as Good Wives. Loosely based on the lives of the author and her three sisters, the novel follows Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy March in a Massachusetts town modelled on Concord. While their father serves as a chaplain in the Union Army during the American Civil War, the sisters grow up guided by their mother, Marmee, who runs the household and shapes her daughters' characters. Domesticity, work and true love are the book's great themes. Alcott portrayed herself in Jo, a character who has influenced later writers such as Margaret Atwood and J. K. Rowling, and the novel has been called the first vision of the “All-American girl”.
