Anne of Green Gables is a novel by the Canadian writer L. M. Montgomery, first published in 1908 by L. C. Page of Boston. It is set in the late nineteenth century in Avonlea, a fictional town on Prince Edward Island modelled on Cavendish. The siblings Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert want to adopt a boy to help on their farm, but through a misunderstanding the orphanage sends them Anne Shirley, an eleven-year-old girl. Fanciful, imaginative, talkative and dramatic, sensitive about her red hair and insistent that her name be spelled with an “e”, Anne gradually changes the lives of those around her. Beneath its humour, the novel deals with loss, rejection and loneliness. Translated into at least 36 languages, it has sold more than fifty million copies and is taught to students around the world.
