A Tale of Two Cities is a novel by Charles Dickens, serialized weekly in 1859 in his own periodical, All the Year Round. Set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution, it opens with one of the most famous lines in literature: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” Doctor Manette is released from the Bastille after eighteen years of imprisonment and reunited with his daughter Lucie, whom he had never met. Around them move Charles Darnay, a man with ties to a noble French family, and Sydney Carton, a disillusioned barrister who looks strikingly like him, while in a Paris on the brink of upheaval the Defarges, keepers of a wine shop, feed the coming revolution. Resurrection, doubles and sacrifice are its great themes.
